Joyce Frost Receives Lifetime Achievement Award
From an article published in the Penn-Franklin News dated November 18, 2015 concerning ESAL member Joyce Frost:
Joyce Frost, of Murrysville, was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the East Suburban Artists League during the organization’s 50th Anniversary dinner, Saturday, Nov. 14. The first Gerrie and William Harlacher Award recipient, Frost, whose medium is photography, joined ESAL in the 1980’s along with her husband, Larry, who was also a photographer, after they were speakers for one of the meetings.
She began taking black and white photos at the age of 15 and had colored them, turning to digital images in 2009. A member of the Photographic Society of America for 65 years, she was awarded a “Green Eagle Achievement Award” by the PSA-sponsored administrator of the portfolio to which she had submitted photos.
Frost has received awards for her photos in many local art shows including: Christian Art Show, Penn Hills, Monroeville, Murrysville Women’s Club, ESAL members’ show at Boyce Campus of CCAC, and the Murrysville Photo Contest.
Also attending the celebration was the group’s founder, Mary Ann Clarke, who began the organization as the Holiday Park Artists League, drawing members from the eastern suburbs working in a variety of art mediums. She shared her memories of the organization’s beginnings in 1965.
A native of western Pennsylvania, Clark has resided in Cape Charles on the Eastern Shore of Virginia for the past 22 years. She earned a degree in art education in 1957 from Indiana State Teachers College which is now IUP, and for over 40 years she has taught drawing and watercolor painting in adult education programs. Her work had been published in several issues of the Artist’s magazine and in a North Lights Book called Basic Flower Painting Techniques in Watercolor. She has also illustrated two books with pencil drawings for an Eastern Shore author. The Ellen Moore Gallery in Cape Charles currently exhibits her work.
Since its inception, the East Suburban Artists League has continued to promote education, inspiration and encouragement to artists and patrons through monthly meetings that include fellowship, lectures and demonstrations and league-sponsored shows of members’ artwork.
Although first called the Holiday park Artists League, the name was changed in 1980 when membership had grown to a wider area. The group meets at Christ Lutheran Church on Route 286 at Logan Ferry Road. New members are always welcomed. More information can be found at the league’s website at ESALart.org or by contacting Karen at 412-798-3158.
